Happy Earth Day!

Some say Earth is a rock crawling with life.

I tend to believe this rock is plenty alive.

I went to the planetarium the other day and it showed me the galaxies in motion...

...they lookes like micro organisms, the ones you see in water.

They swim fast in their broth... so do the galaxies.

To us, puny little beings, that takes millions and millions of years and we
are gone in the blink of an eye or even less.

We are but speckles of dust on a small part of something really big, so big that we don't see it.

And maybe it is so big it is really swimming in our glass. What do we know?
The micro organisms we see in water are probably some other universe's galaxies and there's life on them.

It's a fractal. Who knows how many universes we destroyed when drinking a glass of water and who knows how many millions of years of history live in a few seconds, right there, in our glass.

One day will be transformed in the same way. Somebody will drink our glass and we'll be left wondering what life is about and why it is... life!

But since it is NOW that matter, we want to be there when that will happen... so let's keep our planet safe. I'd like to think it's an important part of the Universe, even though it's just a speckle of dust, just because it is there!

Free Week for monuments and Museums in Rome!

Of course I took advantage of it and went to visit:

- The planetarium.
- San Pietro in Vincoli.

You can see pictures of my visits here

This is Giulio II's Mausoleum in San Pietro in Vincoli. It's famous for it was sculpted by Michelangelo. The Moses, at the feet of the construction, was so real looking and so natural that legend says... that Michelangelo hit his knee with a hammer and asked him: why can't you talk?
PhotobucketPhotobucket
The one in the box are the Vincoli - that is the chains - who held Saint Peter captive before he was put to death! (don't ask me if they are real or not, I don't really care and I don't need to know! I still find this very beautiful).

Btw, because of the vulcan erupting in Iceland, nobody could fly from Rome and so... look what happened at the train Station in Termini:

PhotobucketPhotobucket

These are lines to get tickets... I am standing on a balcony on top of the ticket office and the lines goes all the way out of the station and comes back in from the other side! I think they spent the day in line, poor people! I was sorry especially for those families with small kids... and lots of luggage!

There's very little left of Caracalla...
PhotobucketPhotobucket
Imagine this place covered in multi colored marbles in sectile opus style and with black and white mosaics on the floor - on the upper floor - and colored ones on the bottom floor.
Supposedly it looked something like this:

Photobucket
Our tour guide, an archeologist called Ilaria, was very nice and detailed in explaining the history of the building and what having public baths meant in ancient Rome. Amazing! :D

The ruins are now inhabited by evil seagulls...
Photobucket
Will you look at this guy's face? XDDD

The Museum of Via Ostiense is attached to the Pyramid Cestia.
Of course it focuses on the road that connected Rome to its harbors Ostia and Porto.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Isn't it amazing to have an hexagonal basin inside the city?
Of course you realize how amazing the Romans were when you go to the Museum of Roman civilization. Now, this museum has no original piece in it, only replicas... then why go? Well... because while other museums have bits and pieces of this and that... this one is made in a way that through plasters and replicas it can explain to you how Rome worked: how was life for a merchant? how did a sailor work on ship? how was oil made? how did agriculture work? and so forth...

Photobucket
This is a restaurant menu, they serve: Chicken, fish, ham, peacock and partridge XD
You would see instruments, architecture, tools of war, weapons, book... a library... toys... and plasters reconstructing famous building - like the house of the poet in Pompeii - and Rome itself in the IV century.

Looks like sailors had it tough! ^_=
Photobucket

And didn't know how to swim. Just look at the pictures in the first link to see the rest of the album. I spent two wonderful days and the rest was really what I needed for my arm!

Taking advantage of my being convalescent... this week - museums and monuments are for free - I will be going to Rome to see things!
I was thinking about Caracalla - with a tour guide - and then the Ostiense museum and - I am willing to pay for this - the Planetarium.
I wish the Maritime Museum were close by... but it's so far away! Well it's more of a museum of Ancient navigation but they have a full Roman ship! Pretty neat, huh!
So expect some nice pictures in the next few days... and as Google celebrate the week with a neat logo... I am preparing my bag for tomorrow.

Il terzo capitolo è finalmente concluso e online.

http://thepiratebalthasar.blogspot.com

Lego Pirate Ship - Part 2

Do you remember this?
Well, I finally managed to finish it!

As usual this stuff starts assembling in a very random and mysterious way... until you find the meaning of it all and something really cool shows up!

Like these details!
Come questi dettagli.

And here's the poop castle! With a cannon that had me laughing for twenty minutes... because it rotates and you can really shoot anywhere you want!

The doors... put them on the hinges before you add the bricks or the thing will fall apart.

You add the deck (it actually slides *ç*) and then you pass onto the next piece to be put together.

The bowsprit and figurehead representing an.... eeeer... merman/maid thingy!
Let's face it she is no Ariel!

But the masts await... aaah the second picture makes my heart throb every time! *_*

This was another of those mysterious moment where... I didn't know what was going on and was just folliwing Danish' instructions...

And when you see nets and chains... things don't make sense until you see this!

Finally, after the riggings, I get to the sails.
E dopo le sartie tocca alle vele.

How mighty cool this looks in the end!
Che figata stratosferica, alla fine, eh!

Tadaaaa! Time to play like an idiot, now!
Tadaaan!

Pirate: Jump, you wench! Down, to feed my pet shark!
Wench: Mhhh, seafood I am hungry too.
Shark: I don't like that lady!

Soldier: don't cry, lady, we'll save you!

Soldati: non piangere, a mammà, ti salviamo noi!

Pirate: get outta here, I saw you coming, that's no surprise attack! Get ready with the cannons!

Pirata: ma mi faccia il piacere! Vi ho visti arrivare, mo' ghe pensi mi! Cannoni pronti!

Cannon pirate: Here I go!
Pirate: Dude, you are on the wrong side of the ship!
Cannon pirate: Oh, ship!

Cannoniere: Mo' ti strafulmino!

Crow's nest: The British are coming!
Sword Pirate: I'll make skewers of 'em!

Parrot: Polly wants crackers!

Pappagallo: Loreto vuole biscotto!

I could go on like this for ever but I will stop here, so stop hatig me - get your own pirate ship instead and have fun with it!

Buona Pasqua!
Happy Easter - Buona Pasqua

Don't eat the surprise inside the eggs, like my friend Pandorino did here!
